what is it with cats and advertising?

hi everyone
let's talk about an increasing trend...

the advertising world is going feline crazy recently
especially in the UK
using the pets as the face of countless campaigns often in a humorous way

look at cravendale milk's 'cats with thumbs' campaign
one of the first I noticed
okay okay
it is hilarious
but WHY
why use this idea to advertise milk
does it actually make the consumer buy their brand of milk?

with witty narration and clever brand placement this campaign entertains and sticks into the audiences mind, and successfully became a topic of conversation amongst viewers

this is one of my favourite modern campaigns
but...
I still don't buy cravendale milk

here's a brand spanking new take on cats
it's phone network O2's campaign named 'be more dog'

from the point of view from a 'cat' it shows how bored and lazy their life is, and decides they want to be like a dog, who are hyper, excitable and friendly all the time

at first I was like,
why would they use this
why does this help O2 get customers
then I understood the analogy
we should get out there
try everything and anything
and their network caters for that
or so they say

they have also released this inspiring video about the theory behind the campaign
it's short and fun to watch

next up is IKEA's brilliant campaign 'happy inside'
in which one advert leaves you feeling all fluffy and warm

they released 100 house cats in the IKEA store in Wembley and filmed their antics all around the huge store
(I love this)

soft relaxing music together with the slow motion shots captured of the free roaming felines
the ad really proves their tag line "Home. It's how it makes you feel"

they also have a video showing the making of the ad, where they have to cut a hole in the wall to retrieve a cheeky cat!

popular soft drink brand J20 have also had their fingers in this pie with their cats and dogs campaign
in this random yet somewhat typical advert, human bodies together with cat heads are throwing a party then some dog heads show up
they are only allowed in because they brought with them J20's
(which are apparently pets favourite drink when their not getting drunk)

I'll leave you with one more which comes from the USA
I don't think any explanation is needed for this one

SO
cat's are in
human's are out
I guess that makes us pretty boring
or that they're just trying to tap into our nostalgic mind
because who doesn't love a fluffy old feline

thanks for reading :)
